Introduction

The member journey at TUM.ai is organized in semesters and one semester is 6 full months. As an active member at TUM.ai, you can choose to have the Advocate journey or the Maker journey at the beginning of the semester. The Advocate journey lasts for one semester, whereas the Maker journey lasts at least one semester and can be continued for multiple semesters. Regardless of your chosen journey, you will be part of a department for the semester. TUM.ai is structured in departments, which are the drivers that move the initiative forward and enable us to reach new heights. The department overview can be found here. But first, let´s check out the details of the journey of an Advocate or a Maker.

ADVOCATE

The Advocate journey is your path to getting a holistic view of AI and growing in the role of an AI advocate. As you can see in the overview, you will start the journey together with the Makers with the Onboarding and an AI Bootcamp. After that, you will contribute to TUM.ai with department and project work, as well as participate in the educational offerings throughout the semester. You are obligated to join one department (5h/week), one project (2h/week), and the mandatory educational offerings (3h/week). The total time commitment for the Advocate journey is 10 hours per week. In addition, be ready for our community offerings, where you can strongly connect with other amazing batchmates. These can be excursions, community events, and even workshops at our industrial partners, organized exclusively for your batch.

After you have completed your journey, you will receive a certificate from us, in which your department and project contribution to TUM.ai and the completed education track is stated. Successfully completing your Advocate journey does not mean that your journey with TUM.ai has ended, you can either continue as a Maker in the new semester or apply to become a Team Lead in any department to deliver an even stronger impact to the community.

MAKER

Makers mainly focus on organizational work. You will join one department and have the chance to contribute to TUM.ai’s mission in the areas you are most passionate about. As a Maker, your mandatory time commitment is 6 hours per week. In case you have more time available, you are welcome to join or create a project, and most of the educational offerings are available during the semester too. However, an official certificate is not available at the end of the semester. Even though community offerings are organized for different batches of Advocates, you are still very welcome to join the offerings to expand your network within and outside of TUM.ai. Advocates will have priority in community offerings, but there will be some extra spots available for joining the offerings most of the time.

At the end of the semester, you can choose the journey you would like to pursue for the next semester. You can continue to be a Maker or become a Team Lead for a department. If you have not completed an Advocate Journey before, you are welcome to become an Advocate too.

Department Work, Project Work, and Education

Department work is vital to keep TUM.ai running on a daily basis and bring the initiative to new heights. At the same time, members work together across departments in project teams to bring ****individual projects to life. Some of the amazing projects we have are the Berlin Trip, the KNUST project, the Kaggle Challenge project, and the Homebase project. As a 3rd pillar next to department and project work, TUM.ai offers AI education. This is mainly offered through participation in the AI academy, a series of lectures and workshops offering AI knowledge that spans over the semester. On top of that, you have the option to participate in the TUM.ai Makeathon or the TUM.ai Industry Projects. While you will meet with your department and project in a weekly to bi-weekly rhythm, the education offerings will take place on fixed dates.

Berlin AI Ecosystem Excursion

19 TUM.ai members participated in the four-day trip to visit 6 amazing companies in the AI ecosystem in Berlin. We had workshops with Briink, ai4medicine, Nocturne and Continental at the AI Campus Berlin. We had also the fantastic opportunity to have workshops with kineo.ai and Ultimate at their offices.

The Kaggle Challenge Project

This project aims to create and organize Kaggle Challenges as part of improving the practical coding and AI skills of the participants. We provided Kaggle competitions not only for TUM.ai members but also for TUM.ai’s signature projects such as the KNUST project and the AI Bootcamp.
